JW Dundees Makes the Evening News
For two years now, members of
the JW Dundee's Premium Beers Cycling Team have been spending their Monday
evenings helping The Interlakes Foundation with a
Wellness Program for
recovering cancer patients. Team members share the duty of leading the rides
and offering technique and training pointers to ride participants. Everyone
is getting more fit, and rumor has it that certain members of the "Elite"
cycling team are having difficulty keeping up. The group starts from Mendon
Ponds Park and finds new and challenging rides each week, some over 20
miles. To see a recap of the WHAM segment on these events click

Rob Dietrick Injured in Ascension Crit
August 13, 2005 North
Tonawanda, NY --- Rob Dietrick was
struck from behind in the field sprint of the recent Ascension Crit. No
fault of his own, yet his injuries appear to be significant enough to end
his 2005 season early. Rob was taken to the hospital immediately and will
need hand surgery to repair a severed tendon in his right hand. He lost
considerable skin as well which is painful and makes any position
uncomfortable.
"There was no way to avoid this, as one second I was coming to the
finish, and a 1/2 second later I was skidding on the pavement...Someone
just was not looking and hit me from behind"
This was unfortunate timing as Rob's recent results
demonstrated he was enjoying superior form. The team will do everything
possible to make his recovery swift and get him back on the bike as quickly
as possible.
Three Podium Spots for JW Dundee's
at Empire State Games
July 28, 2005
--- The JW Dundee's Cycling Team captured three podium spots in the most
recent Empire State Games. Dwight Roth started it out with a well deserved
Bronze medal in the Masters Individual Time Trial. Dwight covered the
distance in 23:26.3
I emptied everything I
had into that thing and was in my 54-13 for 5 miles on the way back...As
you can see I was 4 seconds from silver and 6 seconds from nothing...it
was very competitive and a lot of fun...I feel great that I got the bronze
and I worked as hard as I could and had nothing at the finish line except
about 20 minutes of coughing from scorching your lungs for 23 minutes ---
Dwight Roth
In the Masters Crit, Rob
Dietrick showed his stuff my winning the gold Medal. The critierium
consisted of a sprint for points every 5 laps. Dwight went on the early
attack and in Dwight Style was off the front. Rob covered the counters. Soon
Dwight was back in the pack leading out Rob for 3 sprint wins. Rob is
showing some definite Crit prowess, and looks to capture some podium spots
in the upcoming fall Crit season. Dwight picked up enough point to come home
with the Bronze as well.
Mike Mathis picked up a well
deserved 6th place in the open division road race.
JW Dundee's Scores a
Podium Hat Trick at Rochester Twilight Crit!
June 25, 2005 -
Rochester NY ---The temperatures at this past Saturday's Rochester
Twilight Criterium were almost as torrid as the legs of the JW Dundee's
Premium Beers Cycling Team, as the squad pulled off two gold medals and
one silver medal at the hometown event that is quickly becoming one of the
premier bicycle races in the entire country.
Mark Dux
started things off with a fine second place finish in the Category 4 race
that saw extremely high temperatures and extremely high speeds. With 1.5
laps to go in the race, teammate Dave Rowley stormed to
the front of the pack and drilled the pace to discourage any late attacks,
setting up Mark nicely to do what he does best: go very fast with 300
yards left in the race. Mark just got nipped at the line and settled for
an excellent second place finish.
Our junior rider,
Cheyne Hoag kept the ball rolling and added to his increasingly
notorious reputation as one of the area's best junior racers by winning
his race in the junior's category. Cheyne rode a smart race and worked
well in the lead group of three, then simply ripped their legs off at the
finish to claim his first place medal.
Next up was the Category 3
race, which was also the showcase event of the evening for the amateur
racers. And what a fine warm-up act for the pro race it was! The JW
Dundee's Category 3 squad consisted of Dwight Roth,
Taylor Hogan and Mike Mathis. Taylor
and Dwight rode incredibly well, with Dwight putting on an amazing show of
power early in the race as he bridged solo to a lone breakaway rider, but
make no mistake, this race was The Mike Mathis Show, all
the way! Shortly after the pack caught Dwight and his breakaway
companion, Mike attacked the field and immediately got a gap. He held
that gap, pretty much on his own, almost to the finish. This was an
awe-inspiring show of panache; pure class the likes of which is rarely
seen in amateur racing! With just a few laps remaining in the race, and
with the pain of the massive effort clearly etched on Mike's face, Chris
Riley (Navigators/R3) bridged solo to Mike. A little help was just what
the pair needed to stay away from the surging pack behind them, and as
they sprinted for the finish, Mike showed his finishing power as he
crossed the line first with several bike lengths to spare. Awesome job by
the team, and another gold medal for the JW Dundee's Premium Beers Cycling
Team.
Since this event was also
the New York State Criterium Championships, please join us in
congratulating NYS Junior Criterium Champion, Cheyne Hoag; NYS Category 3
Criterium Champion, Mike Mathis; and NYS Category 4 Silver Medalist, Mark
Dux.
Additional Note:
We would like to sincerely thank the organizers of the Rochester
Twilight Criterium for another great job organizing this event. We in
Rochester are so indebted to you! In two short years, this event has
literally put Rochester on the cycling map! The sponsors love it, the
spectators love it, and the racers (especially the pros!) love it. If you
are reading this and you missed seeing this event, man, you blew it!
Don't let it happen again! This race presents such an unheard of
opportunity to witness some of the best athletes in the world giving
everything they've got in the most beautiful sport of all, bicycle racing
Dwight Roth A.K.A. TT Man
June 18, 2005 - Springwater NY
--- Dwight Roth, put on his cape and came out flying in the recent New York
State Time Trial Championship. On a rolling and windy course, Dwight went
the 40K in 58:34, or in Dwight terms 25.4715 MPH! That time put
Dwight in 6th place! While Dwight
certainly excels at TT events, he is an all rounder (Rolleur) with
abilities that go far beyond the race of truth. Dwight will be racing in the
upcoming Rochester Criterium
this Saturday in the Cat 3 race. Congratulations Dwight!
Big Weekend for JW Dundee's
Cycling Team
May 29, 2005 - Syracuse NY
--- Mike Mathis came up with the goods again, by coming in second in the GC
for the 2005 Syracuse Race Weekend. Mike toughed out a hilly 60 mile road
race coming in sixth, and was in the lead break during the Criterium on
Sunday, getting second and once all the points were counted, Mike got second
overall. Congratulation to Mike.
Cheyne Hoag once again
demonstrated his climbing abilities by grabbing second place in the Junior
Road Race. Congratulation to Cheyne.
JW Dundee's provided craft
packs of beer for primes during the Crit and Saturday evening street

their hard efforts.
